A STEEL flagpole modelled on the mizzen mast of HMS Victory could be going up at Delancey Park this winter.
But the Admiral De Saumarez Trust – the group behind the regeneration of the park – has said it would be an interim measure while fund-raising continued for a metal obelisk on the site.
The trust was given planning permission for the obelisk on the site of the former granite tower in 2009, but has been struggling to raise the money needed for the structure.
Board of trustees director Alex Rodger hoped the new mast would be erected this winter. ‘The iconic stainless steel obelisk is still very much a long-term objective of the Admiral De Saumarez Trust, but following consultation with the trust’s supporters and the community it was felt that other options should be considered,’ he said.
