It is not surprising that a small island should create men of the sea; what is surprising is the number and significance of those individuals

Admiral De Saumarez

The outstanding figure is Admiral the Right Honourable James Lord de Saumarez.

The bicentenary of the Battle of Trafalgar October 2005 prompted a close look at the events and characters of the period; added to which is the interest generated by authors such as Patrick O’Brian. O’Brian wrote a wonderful series of books which were themselves turned into a memorable film faithfully recreating the sights and sounds of the times, Master and Commander. Here is an opportunity to re-evaluate the contribution of de Saumarez whose career and contribution to the Royal Navy and Britain’s maritime interests have not been given sufficient recognition, at least by history.
